ISO 26262 Certification

In the new energy era, vehicles are becoming increasingly electronic, accompanied by growing risks arising from failures of electronic systems.

ISO 26262, the automotive functional safety standard, serves as a reference specification that helps automakers, component suppliers and automotive semiconductor chip manufacturers fully identify various risks during product R&D and minimize design and safety hazards to the greatest extent.

Compliance with ISO 26262 has become an industry trend and an essential entry ticket for the automotive sector.

1. Improve Vehicle Safety Performance

ISO 26262 is an international standard for the automotive industry dedicated to guaranteeing the safety performance of automotive electronic systems. Its implementation standardizes and regulates the design, development, testing and verification of automotive electronic systems, thus enhancing overall vehicle safety.

2. Meet Legal and Regulatory Requirements

Many countries and regions have enacted relevant laws and regulations mandating automotive manufacturers to comply with ISO 26262. Adherence to this standard enables manufacturers to satisfy regulatory obligations and avoid legal liabilities and economic losses resulting from non-compliance.

3. Boost Corporate Competitiveness

As a globally recognized automotive standard, ISO 26262 represents a core competitive edge for enterprises within the industry. Conforming to ISO 26262 helps enterprises upgrade product quality and safety performance, so as to strengthen market competitiveness and expand market share.

ASIL Level

The core of ISO 26262 lies in ASIL levels (Automotive Safety Integrity Levels). Based on three dimensions of risk: severity, exposure and controllability, it classifies automotive safety requirements into four levels in ascending order of risk as follows:

  • ASIL A: The lowest risk level, applicable to certain auxiliary reminder functions.

  • ASIL B: Medium risk level, such as standard ESP (Electronic Stability Program).

  • ASIL C: Relatively high risk level, e.g. Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).

  • ASIL D: The highest risk level, covering steering systems and high-voltage battery management systems (for new energy vehicles).

Higher levels impose stricter requirements on rigorous development processes, complete documentation and comprehensive test coverage.

Scope of Application

Applicable Products: Passenger vehicles equipped with electrical and electronic systems (Category M1, referring to passenger vehicles with no more than 9 seats). This standard is not directly applicable to commercial vehicles, motorcycles or components irrelevant to functional safety (e.g., window lift motors).

Applicable Parties:

  • Vehicle Manufacturers (OEMs): Take the lead in defining vehicle-level safety requirements and assigning ASIL levels.

  • Component Suppliers (Tier1/Tier2): Conduct compliant development of specific components (such as radars and domain controllers) in accordance with OEM requirements.

  • Software/Hardware Service Providers: Supply tool chains (e.g., development software, test equipment) or technical support that meet ISO 26262 requirements.

Grade Evaluation Dimension Table

Evaluation Dimension

Rank

Level Code

Core Description

Severity

(Degree of injury caused by faults)

Rank 1

S0

No injury (e.g. mere functional failure without personal safety risks)

Rank 2

S1

Minor injury (such as slight abrasions, temporary discomfort, no medical intervention required)

Rank 3

S2

Severe injury (such as fractures, organ damage requiring hospitalization)

Rank 4

S3

Life-threatening / fatal injury (such as severe craniocerebral trauma, lethal wounds)

Exposure

(Frequency of fault scenario occurrence)

Rank 1

E0

Extremely rare (hardly occurs throughout the whole vehicle service life)

Rank 2

E1

Low frequency (occurs occasionally during vehicle service life)

Rank 3

E2

Medium frequency (may occur in daily operation)

Rank 4

E3

High frequency (occurs frequently in daily operation)

Controllability

(Driver's capability to avoid risks)

Rank 1

C0

Fully controllable (Drivers can easily evade hazards with no risk of injury)

Rank 2

C1

High controllability (Drivers need active operation for evasion with high success probability)

Rank 3

C2

Low controllability (Drivers struggle to evade hazards with low success probability)

Rank 4

C3

Uncontrollable (Drivers cannot avoid hazards and injuries are inevitable)

ASIL Combination Rules

-

-

Three conditions shall be met simultaneously: 1. Severity ≥ S2 (at least minor injury); 2. Exposure ≥ E1 (low frequency and above); 3. Controllability ≤ C2 (low controllability and below). (Note: The specific ASIL level shall be calculated by combining the three parameters. For example, S3+E2+C2 generally corresponds to ASIL C)

Service Process

Enterprises shall carry out activities around the "Safety Lifecycle", and the core processes can be divided into 3 steps:

  • Safety requirement definition and ASIL classification: Clarify the safety goals of products, and determine the ASIL level of each function combined with risk analysis methods such as FMEA and HARA.

  • Compliant development and document retention: Implement standardized development processes in accordance with ASIL level requirements, including requirement management, design review, software and hardware testing, fault injection testing, etc., and retain complete sets of documents (such as safety plans and test reports).

  • Audit and certificate of conformity: Conduct audits by the professional team of HuaWayDa to verify whether the development processes and documents comply with standards, and finally obtain a Certificate of Compliance instead of a traditional "certification certificate".
