Electrostatic testing is a technical method that detects electrostatic parameters of objects (electric charge quantity, voltage, decay speed, etc.) via professional equipment and procedures to assess electrostatic risks and ensure the safety of products or working environments.

Its core test types fall into three categories:

• First, electrostatic parameter testing of objects, which measures electrostatic voltage (contact / non-contact type), surface resistance and volume resistance;

• Second, testing of electrostatic protective materials. Targeting anti-static garments, conductive floors and other supplies, it tests resistance value, static decay time and surface charge density;

• Third, electrostatic discharge (ESD) immunity testing, which simulates the impact of electrostatic discharge on electronic equipment to judge whether equipment malfunctions.

Three types of commonly used testing equipment are listed as follows:

• Electrostatic voltmeter (divided into contact type and non-contact type; the non-contact type is suitable for precision products)

• Surface resistance tester (measures resistance between two points on material surfaces to judge anti-static / conductive performance, applied to workshop floor and packaging material testing)

• Electrostatic discharge generator (ESD gun, simulates discharge from human bodies or equipment to verify the anti-static capacity of electronic devices).

Its application scenarios are mainly concentrated in electrostatic-sensitive industries:

• The electronics manufacturing industry tests the anti-static performance of chips, circuit boards and other components to prevent damage during production and transportation;

• The chemical / pharmaceutical industry detects static accumulation of flammable and explosive materials to avoid fire and explosion hazards;

• The textile / printing industry measures electrostatic parameters of fabrics and paper to solve problems such as adhesion and dust adsorption.
