Food Contact Testing

Food Contact Materials Testing (FCM Testing) refers to the safety testing of materials and articles that come into direct or indirect contact with food (such as packaging, containers, kitchen utensils, etc.). It aims to assess whether chemical substances migrating from them into food (including heavy metals, additives, solvent residues, etc.) comply with safety limits and ensure no harm to human health. All countries have strict regulatory requirements for food contact materials, which serve as a mandatory compliance prerequisite for such products to enter the market.

Hazardous substances in food contact materials may migrate into food. Common risk substances include:

Heavy metals: Lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury, etc. (commonly found in ceramic glazes and metal coatings);
Plastic additives: Phthalates (plasticizers), Bisphenol A (BPA, used in polycarbonate plastics), antioxidants (such as BHT);
Solvents and residues: Solvents in printing inks (e.g. toluene), formaldehyde in adhesives, monomer residues in plastics (e.g. vinyl chloride);
Microbial contamination: Sanitation indicators of materials (such as total bacterial count, mould);
Others: Fluorescent whitening agents (paper), perfluorinated compounds (non-stick pan coatings), total migrants (overall migration, specific migration limits).
