Carbon Label Certification Service

Carbon label is derived from carbon footprint, also known as carbon logo. To mitigate climate change, reduce greenhouse‑gas emissions and promote low‑emission technologies, it quantitatively indicates the greenhouse‑gas emissions generated by commodities throughout their whole life cycle (including raw‑material extraction, manufacturing, packaging, storage & transportation, distribution, utilization, disposal and recycling) on product labels, so as to inform consumers of product‑related carbon information in the form of labels.

Carbon label certification refers to third‑party evaluation carried out for eligible products or services by adopting certification approaches in accordance with product carbon‑label evaluation standards. It is a voluntary evaluation certification oriented toward high‑quality product and service brands. Evaluated products/services will obtain product carbon‑label evaluation certificates jointly issued by China Electronic Energy‑Saving Technology Association, China Carbon Label Industry Innovation Alliance and certification bodies.

Development Background of Carbon Label

China officially promoted the construction of carbon‑label system in 2018. Led by China Low‑Carbon Committee and united with forces from government, industry, universities and research institutes, pilot work was firstly launched in the electrical and electronic industry to formulate a series of evaluation standards for carbon labels of electrical and electronic products and build a carbon‑label evaluation service system.

In August 2019, China’s association standard Carbon Label Mark (T/DZJN 004‑2019) was officially released, which specifies carbon‑label patterns that can display carbon‑emission values and evaluation grades. There are three star grades in total: one‑star for carbon‑disclosure products, two‑star for carbon‑reduction products and three‑star for low‑carbon products.

In August 2021, Implementation Rules for Voluntary Evaluation of Industry‑wide Unified Product Carbon Label (Interim) was issued. While providing guiding principles for carbon‑label evaluation across all industries, continuous efforts have been made to formulate and revise detailed implementing rules for various industries.

In January 2022, General Rules for Enterprise Carbon Label Evaluation (T/DZJN 75‑2022) was officially released. It is China’s first association standard for carbon‑label evaluation dominated by enterprises, compiled under the lead of the Low‑Carbon Economy Special Committee of China Electronic Energy‑Saving Technology Association and issued by China Electronic Energy‑Saving Technology Association.

Relevant Standards
  • PAS 2050:2008 Specification for the assessment of the life‑cycle greenhouse‑gas emissions of goods and services, published by the British Standards Institution, is the world’s first accounting standard for product carbon footprint. Jointly initiated by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the UK Carbon Trust, it is mainly used to account for and assess greenhouse‑gas emissions generated by products and services throughout their life‑cycle.

  • Greenhouse Gas Protocol: Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard is a consumer‑oriented standard jointly developed by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. It is a widely‑recognized international standard for calculating product carbon footprint.

  • ISO 14067:2018 Greenhouse gases — Carbon footprint of products — Requirements and guidelines for quantification. In ISO 14067, product carbon footprint is defined as the sum of greenhouse‑gas emissions and removals within a product system assessed based on life‑cycle approach, with results expressed as carbon‑dioxide equivalent.

  • China’s carbon‑label evaluation standards mainly include General Rules for Carbon‑Footprint Evaluation of Electrical and Electronic Products (T/DZJN 001‑2018), the series standards for carbon‑footprint evaluation of electrical and electronic products, Carbon Label Mark (T/DZJN 004‑2019), Implementation Rules for Voluntary Evaluation of Industry‑wide Unified Product Carbon Label, General Rules for Enterprise Carbon Label Evaluation (T/DZJN 75‑2022), etc.

  • General Rules for Enterprise Carbon Label Evaluation (T/DZJN 75‑2022) was released on January 20, 2022. Different from product carbon labels, this standard focuses on the enterprise as a whole. By comprehensively evaluating its low‑carbon performance and potential, it grants enterprise carbon labels, motivates enterprises to carry out low‑carbon construction from a macro perspective and builds low‑carbon images. It is China’s first evaluation standard for enterprise carbon labels.

Value & Benefits
  • Affixing carbon labels on products demonstrates confidence in facing product carbon footprints and determination to cut carbon emissions, helping enterprises build a positive brand image.

  • Focusing on source‑oriented pollution and carbon reduction, carbon labels serve as an effective tool for enterprises to achieve carbon emission reduction and build green industrial supply chains.

  • It is an important instrument for enterprises to cope with new barriers in import and export trade, helping them enhance social competitiveness and participation in global carbon trading.

  • It helps improve enterprises’ international reputation, build mutual trust with customers, investors and consumers, and lay a solid foundation for the sustainable future of enterprises.
