Food Contact Testing

Food Contact Materials Testing (FCM Testing) is a safety test conducted on materials and articles that come into direct or indirect contact with food (such as packaging, containers, kitchen utensils, etc.). It aims to assess whether chemical substances migrating into food (e.g., heavy metals, additives, solvent residues) comply with safety limits and ensure no harm to human health. All countries impose strict regulatory requirements on food contact materials, which constitute a mandatory compliance prerequisite for relevant products to enter the market.

Hazardous substances in food contact materials may migrate into food. Common risk substances include:

Heavy metals: Lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury, etc. (commonly found in ceramic glazes and metal coatings);
Plastic additives: Phthalates (plasticizers), Bisphenol A (BPA, used in polycarbonate plastics), antioxidants (e.g. BHT);
Solvents and residues: Solvents in printing inks (e.g. toluene), formaldehyde in adhesives, monomer residues in plastics (e.g. vinyl chloride);
Microbial contamination: Hygiene indicators of materials (e.g. total bacterial count, mould);
Others: Optical brighteners (paper), perfluorinated compounds (non-stick pan coatings), total migrants (e.g. overall migration, specific migration).

Containers and tableware: Plastic bowls/cups, stainless steel tableware, ceramic bowls, melamine tableware, silicone moulds;
Kitchenware and home appliances: Non-stick pan coatings, coffee machine accessories, juicer filters, microwave oven liners;
Auxiliary materials: Food-grade adhesives, printing inks, coatings, sealing gaskets (e.g. bottle cap seals);
Others: Food-contact components of food processing equipment (e.g. conveyor belts, pipelines).
