ISO 14001 Environmental Management System

ISO 14000 refers to a series of international environmental management standards developed by Technical Committee 207 (TC207) of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) starting from 1993. It covers

key research and practical topics in the field of international environmental management, including Environmental Management System (EMS), Environmental Auditing (EA), Environmental Labeling (EL), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Environmental Performance Evaluation (EPE), Terms and Definitions

(T&D), providing governments of all countries and various organizations with unified and consistent international standards for environmental management systems and products, as well as strict and standardized audit and certification methods.

The implementation of ISO14001 by enterprises is necessary to save energy, reduce consumption, recycle waste, cut environmental protection expenses and lower costs. Through establishing and implementing an environmental management system,

enterprises can reduce the generation and emission of pollutants, promote waste recycling, save energy and raw materials, avoid fines and pollutant discharge fees, so as to reduce costs.

Many countries explicitly require manufacturing enterprises to obtain ISO14001 certification. Failure to acquire ISO14001 certification has become a technical barrier for enterprises to strive for larger domestic market share and carry out

international trade. Therefore, only by implementing the ISO14001 environmental management system to improve comprehensive management level, enhance corporate image and reduce environmental risks, can enterprises

better capture domestic and overseas markets.

To achieve sound and long-term development, enterprises may obtain ISO14001 certification, which can effectively boost the coordinated and sustainable development of corporate environment and economy and lead enterprises onto a path of sound and

long-term growth. It is also a requirement for fulfilling social responsibilities. Currently, environmental pollution poses a grave threat to human survival and draws attention from countries worldwide. Protecting the environment on which mankind depends

for survival is the responsibility of the whole world and society, and every enterprise is obligated to minimize environmental impacts. The standard helps reduce environmental risks arising from pollution incidents or violations of laws and regulations.

It increases enterprises' opportunities to access preferential credit and insurance policies.

In essence, the ISO 14000 series standards are management-oriented standards. They embody the environmental management experience of industrialized nations. When national standards are formulated, conditions of different

countries are taken into full consideration to make the standards universally applicable as far as possible.
