ISO 26262 Certification

In the new energy era, vehicles are becoming increasingly electrified, accompanied by growing risks arising from failures of electronic systems.

ISO 26262, the automotive functional safety standard, serves as a reference standard to help automakers, component suppliers and automotive semiconductor chip manufacturers identify various risks during product development and minimize design and safety hazards.

Compliance with ISO 26262 represents an industry trend and essential entry ticket for the automotive sector.

1. Improve Vehicle Safety Performance

ISO 26262 is an international standard for the automotive industry formulated to guarantee the safety performance of automotive electronic systems. The implementation of ISO 26262 enables more standardized design, development, testing and verification of automotive electronic systems, thus enhancing vehicle safety performance.

2. Meet Legal and Regulatory Requirements

Many countries and regions have introduced relevant laws and regulations mandating automotive manufacturers to comply with ISO 26262. By implementing ISO 26262, automotive manufacturers can satisfy regulatory requirements and avoid legal risks and financial losses caused by non-compliance.

3. Enhance Corporate Competitiveness

As an international automotive standard, ISO 26262 has become a key competitive advantage for enterprises within the industry. Implementation of ISO 26262 allows companies to upgrade product quality and safety performance, so as to strengthen competitiveness and expand market share.

ASIL Level

The core of ISO 26262 lies in ASIL (Automotive Safety Integrity Level). Based on three dimensions of risk: severity, exposure and controllability, it classifies automotive safety requirements into four levels in ascending order as follows:

  • ASIL A: The lowest risk level, e.g. some auxiliary reminder functions.

  • ASIL B: Medium risk level, e.g. conventional ESP (Electronic Stability Program).

  • ASIL C: Relatively high risk level, e.g. Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).

  • ASIL D: The highest risk level, e.g. steering systems and high-voltage battery management (new energy vehicles).

The higher the level, the stricter the requirements for rigor of development processes, completeness of documentation and test coverage.

Scope of Application

Applicable Products: Passenger vehicles equipped with electrical and electronic systems (Category M1, referring to passenger vehicles with no more than 9 seats). It is not directly applicable to commercial vehicles, motorcycles, or components irrelevant to functional safety (e.g., window lift motors).

Applicable Parties:

  • Vehicle Manufacturers (OEMs): Responsible for leading the definition of vehicle-level safety requirements and ASIL level allocation.

  • Component Suppliers (Tier1/Tier2): Shall conduct compliant development of specific components (such as radars, domain controllers) in accordance with OEM requirements.

  • Software/Hardware Service Providers: Offer tool chains (such as development software and test equipment) or technical support complying with ISO 26262 requirements.

Grade Determination Dimension Table

Assessment Dimension

Class

Level Code

Core Description

Severity

(Degree of injury caused by faults)

Class 1

S0

No injury (e.g. merely function failure without personal safety risks)

Class 2

S1

Minor injury (e.g. slight abrasions, temporary discomfort, no medical intervention required)

Class 3

S2

Severe injury (e.g. bone fracture, organ damage requiring hospitalization)

Class 4

S3

Life-threatening / fatal (e.g. severe craniocerebral injury, lethal trauma)

Exposure

(Frequency of occurrence of fault scenarios)

Class 1

E0

Extremely rare (hardly occurs throughout the vehicle service life)

Class 2

E1

Low frequency (occurs occasionally within vehicle service life)

Class 3

E2

Medium frequency (may occur during daily operation)

Class 4

E3

High frequency (occurs frequently during daily operation)

Controllability

(Driver’s ability to avoid risks)

Class 1

C0

Fully controllable (the driver can easily avoid hazards with no risk of injury)

Class 2

C1

Highly controllable (the driver needs to take active evasive action with a high success rate)

Class 3

C2

Low controllability (difficult for the driver to avoid hazards with low success probability)

Class 4

C3

Uncontrollable (the driver cannot prevent injuries which will inevitably occur)

ASIL Level Combination Rules

-

-

The following requirements shall be satisfied simultaneously: 1. Severity ≥ S2 (at least minor injury); 2. Exposure ≥ E1 (low frequency or above); 3. Controllability ≤ C2 (low controllability or below). (Note: The exact level shall be calculated based on the combination of the three indicators. For example, S3+E2+C2 generally corresponds to ASIL C)

Service Process

Enterprises shall carry out activities based on the "Safety Life Cycle", and the core procedures can be divided into three steps:

  • Safety requirement definition and ASIL classification: Define the safety goals of products, and determine the ASIL level of each function through risk analysis (methods including FMEA, HARA, etc.).

  • Compliant development and document retention: Implement standardized development procedures in accordance with ASIL level requirements, including requirement management, design review, software and hardware testing, fault injection testing, etc., and retain complete sets of documents (such as safety plans, test reports).

  • Audit and proof of conformity: Conduct audits by the professional team of HuaWayDa to verify whether development procedures and documents comply with the standard, and finally obtain the Certificate of Compliance instead of a traditional "certification certificate".
