ISO Releases International Standard for Innovation Management Improvement
Date:2019-03-25

Innovation does not necessarily refer to dazzling new technologies or groundbreaking inventions that revolutionize life. It may mean finding a better way of working or improving products to achieve long-term iterative upgrades over time. Nevertheless, leveraging these new ideas and rolling out improvements requires effective strategies to maximize their value.

The newly released ISO 56000 series of international standards aims to provide organizations with guidelines and processes to optimize the performance of their innovation initiatives. ISO 56003 Innovation management — Tools and methods for innovation partnerships — Guidance offers a structured methodology for organizations planning to establish innovation cooperation with external parties. This standard helps organizations determine whether to launch joint innovation projects with other entities, select suitable partners and reach consensus. It also guides organizations in role assignment, clear division of rights and responsibilities, optimal resource allocation, and formulation of effective management procedures.

ISO/TR 56004 Technical Report, Innovation management assessment — Guidance is designed to assist organizations in effectively auditing their innovation management procedures, enabling continuous optimization and smoother operation of innovation processes. In addition, the upcoming ISO 56002 Innovation management — Innovation management system — Guidance to be released by ISO will provide guidelines for the development, implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of practical innovation management systems.

Alice de Casanove, Chair of the ISO technical committee responsible for developing these standards, stated that effective innovation management fuels organizational growth by harnessing the knowledge and creativity of internal staff and external partners.

Alice de Casanove pointed out: "Innovation is far more than major inventions. It represents an organization’s capability to monitor and adapt to shifting external environments, seize emerging opportunities, and fully maximize existing resources."

In this context, many new ideas we witness stem from numerous previously implemented concepts and iterative improvements. These standards support organizations in achieving their goals by delivering industry best practices,

helping organizations acquire accurate information and utilize it efficiently."
